Four men’s perfumes everyone ranks, compared

Summer or winter, how long each lasts, and who it suits.

Scroll through perfume accounts this month and the same names keep coming back in every "best men's perfumes" list. An Instagram post on 1 October ranked five fragrances "every man should own", and we carry four of them: Dior Sauvage Elixir, Creed Aventus, Bleu de Chanel Parfum and Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Elixir. The short answer: all four deserve the attention, but each has its season and its hour. Here is how they compare.

Summer or winter?

It is the question people type most about these four, and it sorts them neatly. Aventus is a summer and spring perfume: pineapple and bergamot open it fruity and bright, and birch smoke underneath gives it an edge without weighing it down in the heat. Bleu de Chanel Parfum belongs to spring and autumn; lemon zest over sandalwood keeps it clean by day and warm at night.

The other two are cold-weather perfumes. Sauvage Elixir opens on cinnamon, grapefruit and cardamom and settles into liquorice, amber and woods, a weight that reads best on a winter night. Le Male Elixir is the sweetest of the four, vanilla, honey and tobacco under a cool lavender. In a Gulf August both are too much. From October to March they come into their own.

How long they last, and how far they reach

In the Gulf, longevity and projection are not details; they are the first question. Going by the data on each product page in our men's perfumes, Sauvage Elixir lasts longest, about 14 hours, with strong projection. Bleu de Chanel Parfum and Le Male Elixir both run about 10 hours, the first moderate in projection, the second strong. Aventus is the shortest, around 5 hours, with moderate projection.

If you want to arrive before you walk in, wear Sauvage Elixir. If you want people to lean closer, wear Bleu.

Lavender, the thread through three of them

Read the notes and one thing stands out: lavender runs through three of the four. In Bleu de Chanel it sits with mint and geranium and keeps the perfume aromatic and clean. In Sauvage Elixir it calms the spice and ties it to the woods. In Le Male Elixir it is the cool note that balances the honey and vanilla. One material, used three ways.

Aventus is the odd one out. No lavender; its heart is pineapple and patchouli over birch and cedar. That is why it feels different from the other three, and why it pairs with them: plenty of men wear Aventus by day and one of the others at night.

If you want one bottle, make it Bleu de Chanel Parfum. If you have room for two, Aventus for the day and Sauvage Elixir or Le Male Elixir for the night, depending on whether you like it spiced or sweet. Every bottle at Atir is original and sealed.
